Endodontics is a field of dentistry that solely covers treating and preventing dental problems related to dental pulp, trauma cases, and microsurgery. A common endodontic treatment is the root canal therapy that effectively reduces pain inflicted due to infection within the pulp of the tooth.

The Anatomy

Inside your tooth lie several layers of tissues that protect and cover the pulp chamber. The enamel acts as the outermost layer of teeth. It is hard, tough, shiny and is the visible layer. Beneath this layer lies a sturdy inner tissue known as the dentin. It makes up the bulk of the tooth's structure and is composed of many tubules that can transmit sensations to the nerve cells.

At the core of the tooth lies the soft pulp chamber that is composed of nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels. Any sign of tooth sensitivity is a sign of damage to the pulp chamber in the form of infection or inflammation.

An endodontic treatment would help alleviate pain experienced due to infection of the dental pulp. First, your dentist would administer you with local anesthesia. A mini access hole would be made on the tooth's surface to reach the pulp chamber. An instrument would then be used to remove any dead or dying tissues from the narrow passage.

Later, the canal would be cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a safe dental filling material. The procedure would be followed by placing a restoration in the form of a crown to restore it to its full function and aesthetics.
